Now, from the outset I would like to say, if you have not yet determined, seeing some of the entries posted on the blog, I study Apologetics on a day-to-day basis - from Creation, to the Flood, all the evidence, the defense for Creation, the like.
When a Christian is asked, "If Adam and Eve were the only people on the Earth, and they had Cain first, where did his wife come from?" Well, it's a simple matter, really. The issue isn't addressing who his wife was. The issue is how people interpret it.
As Christians, we need to be able to "defend at a moment's notice." At the 1925 Scopes Trial, William Jenning Bryan, the one who stood for Christian faith, could not answer a question about Cain's Wife. Here is an excerpt from the question posed by lawyer Clarence Darrow:
"Darrow: Did you ever discover where Cain got his wife? Bryan: No, sir; I leave the agnostics to hunt for her. Darrow: You have never found out? Bryan: I have never tried to find. Darrow: You have never tried to find? Bryan: No. Darrow: The Bible says he got one doesn’t it? Were there other people on the earth at that time? Bryan: I cannot say. Darrow: You cannot say. Did that ever enter your consideration? Bryan: Never bothered me. Darrow: There were no others recorded, but Cain got a wife. Bryan: That is what the Bible says. Darrow: Where she came from you do not know."
"I cannot say." This trial was massively covered by the media, who continually pointed to the fact that Christians do not know how to defend their faith! That is why we go over some of these topics - many skeptics and critics call us out, ask us to defend our faith. My question to you is, will you have a the answer, or will you not know? Some entries on "The Truth" are merely informative. Some are inspirational, some cover prophecy, some cover curiosities - while yet others, Apologetics.
When this blog began, I had someone tell me, "Do not cover Apologetics." So I tried not to, because I had not looked into it. But I tell you, folks, if you are called to defend your faith, and you cannot, because you do not know the answers, how does that help others? Apologetics should be and are a major part of what we learn and teach. All this said, who was Cain's Wife?
Cain's wife was either his sister or his niece. Now, critics tell us, "Genesis tells us that they had no sisters!" Really? I find that a bold claim, considering the fact that I, along with millions of others, have read the Genesis account - and in Genesis 5:4 says, "After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters." (Before this, he had already been living 130 years, totaling 930.)
For one, why isn't the wife of Seth questioned? He was also a son of Adam - he too, had to have a wife, to bear his son Enosh. However, the fact is, "Adam... had other sons and daughters." He did have daughters. Apocryphal sources state two of the daughters names as Awan and Azura. However, these names themselves are not found in God's Word.
Cain's wife is mentioned in Genesis 4:17, "Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch..." Another translation of the Hebrew word, "ishshah," not only means "wife," but also "female/woman." Genesis explicitly states that all descended from Adam and Eve: we are all of one bloodline, but some of us are more distant than others.
Even secular scientists agree that Man had a common ancestor, a "Adam" and "Eve." Acts 17:26 says, "From one man He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth." There was only one man in the beginning - Adam, who was made from the dust of the earth. (Genesis 2:7)
This would also mean that no matter how distant or close a relative Cain's Wife was, she was still a direct descendant of Adam. By the time Cain murdered Abel, there would have been plenty of time for there to be other siblings, such as sisters, to be born, as well as other brothers. If Genesis 4:17 says that Adam had children other than Cain, Abel, and Seth, that were men, it is a fact.
Therefore, Cain's Wife could have been the daughter of one of his brothers. Or, she could have been his sister. The generally accepted idea is that Cain's Wife was his sister. This is the part where people are up in arms and shouting. But I ask that if there are those who can't believe that a brother and sister got together, bear with me. Let's take a look at the objections.
Many people automatically reject the fact that the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve had to marry each other, by stating the Law given at the time of Moses where Brother-Sister marriage is prohibited, also saying that their children would have deformities. However, that is not the case. Why?Noah, who lived several centuries before Moses, had lived around 1,600 years after Adam. Meaning - there is around 2,500+ years in between Adam and Eve - and the Laws given to Moses at Mt. Sinai. Some people say that it is bad to marry a relative, but I tell you, if you do not marry a relative, you cannot marry anyone at all - we are all related!
It is not refuted by secular science, they agree that we are all related. A woman is related to the man even before they are married, because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve - or, narrowing it down even more - descendants of Noah. The law that forbade close marriage - such as brother/sister, mother/son, father/daughter, etc, was not given to Moses until Leviticus 18-20.
Since marriage was a man for a woman, (Genesis 2) in the beginning, the law was not broken - it had not yet been put into effect. If you recall, Abraham was actually married to his half-sister, Sarah, (See Genesis 20:12) and had twice tried to pass her off as his sister. Now, it is true that in today's world, close marriages would cause physical deformities.
However, Adam and Eve originally had perfect bodies. Since their bodies were closer to "perfection," their children were closer than we are today. Meaning, if they reproduced, the deformities would not occur. Since Cain was the first generation from Adam, he would have received the least amount of imperfect genes. It was not considered incest yet because God had not yet placed the Law into effect until there were enough humans to not have to have close marriages.
During the time of Adam and Eve, close intermarriage was common. The mutations within the genes only increase over time - so around 2,500-3,000 years later, laws against this were put into place, since it was no longer necessary, there were enough people to not have close marriages. So, who was Cain's wife? Either his sister or his niece, but most assume his sister.
The issue arises only because in today's society, the worldview has changed, and the world views it as a bad thing. But we, as Christians, need to look at what God has to say about the matter. Since secularists do not base their worldview on the Bible, the answers, which are quite easy, are blind to them.
I trust that answered the question of those who had been asking or wondering. Was it wrong then? No. Is it wrong now? Of course. What changed? Population increased, and the Ceremonial Law was put into effect.
