Who was "Cain's Wife?"

It is an age-old question. Many have answered, some have listened and learned, while others have not taken the time to find the answer for themselves. The intention of this entry is to illustrate who Cain's wife was - and why having her as a wife - at the time - was not considered wrong. (Photo credit to Dan Lietha)

Now, from the outset I would like to say, if you have not yet determined, seeing some of the entries posted on the blog, I study Apologetics on a day-to-day basis - from Creation, to the Flood, all the evidence, the defense for Creation, the like.

When a Christian is asked, "If Adam and Eve were the only people on the Earth, and they had Cain first, where did his wife come from?" Well, it's a simple matter, really. The issue isn't addressing who his wife was. The issue is how people interpret it.

As Christians, we need to be able to "defend at a moment's notice." At the 1925 Scopes Trial, William Jenning Bryan, the one who stood for Christian faith, could not answer a question about Cain's Wife. Here is an excerpt from the question posed by lawyer Clarence Darrow:

"Darrow: Did you ever discover where Cain got his wife? Bryan: No, sir; I leave the agnostics to hunt for her. Darrow: You have never found out? Bryan: I have never tried to find. Darrow: You have never tried to find? Bryan: No. Darrow: The Bible says he got one doesn’t it? Were there other people on the earth at that time? Bryan: I cannot say. Darrow: You cannot say. Did that ever enter your consideration? Bryan: Never bothered me. Darrow: There were no others recorded, but Cain got a wife. Bryan: That is what the Bible says. Darrow: Where she came from you do not know."

"I cannot say." This trial was massively covered by the media, who continually pointed to the fact that Christians do not know how to defend their faith! That is why we go over some of these topics - many skeptics and critics call us out, ask us to defend our faith. My question to you is, will you have a the answer, or will you not know? Some entries on "The Truth" are merely informative. Some are inspirational, some cover prophecy, some cover curiosities - while yet others, Apologetics.

When this blog began, I had someone tell me, "Do not cover Apologetics." So I tried not to, because I had not looked into it. But I tell you, folks, if you are called to defend your faith, and you cannot, because you do not know the answers, how does that help others? Apologetics should be and are a major part of what we learn and teach. All this said, who was Cain's Wife?

Cain's wife was either his sister or his niece. Now, critics tell us, "Genesis tells us that they had no sisters!" Really? I find that a bold claim, considering the fact that I, along with millions of others, have read the Genesis account - and in Genesis 5:4 says, "After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters." (Before this, he had already been living 130 years, totaling 930.)

For one, why isn't the wife of Seth questioned? He was also a son of Adam - he too, had to have a wife, to bear his son Enosh. However, the fact is, "Adam... had other sons and daughters." He did have daughters. Apocryphal sources state two of the daughters names as Awan and Azura. However, these names themselves are not found in God's Word.

Cain's wife is mentioned in Genesis 4:17, "Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch..." Another translation of the Hebrew word, "ishshah," not only means "wife," but also "female/woman." Genesis explicitly states that all descended from Adam and Eve: we are all of one bloodline, but some of us are more distant than others.

Even secular scientists agree that Man had a common ancestor, a "Adam" and "Eve." Acts 17:26 says, "From one man He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth." There was only one man in the beginning - Adam, who was made from the dust of the earth. (Genesis 2:7)

This would also mean that no matter how distant or close a relative Cain's Wife was, she was still a direct descendant of Adam. By the time Cain murdered Abel, there would have been plenty of time for there to be other siblings, such as sisters, to be born, as well as other brothers. If Genesis 4:17 says that Adam had children other than Cain, Abel, and Seth, that were men, it is a fact.

Therefore, Cain's Wife could have been the daughter of one of his brothers. Or, she could have been his sister. The generally accepted idea is that Cain's Wife was his sister. This is the part where people are up in arms and shouting. But I ask that if there are those who can't believe that a brother and sister got together, bear with me. Let's take a look at the objections.

Many people automatically reject the fact that the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve had to marry each other, by stating the Law given at the time of Moses where Brother-Sister marriage is prohibited, also saying that their children would have deformities. However, that is not the case. Why?

Noah, who lived several centuries before Moses, had lived around 1,600 years after Adam. Meaning - there is around 2,500+ years in between Adam and Eve - and the Laws given to Moses at Mt. Sinai. Some people say that it is bad to marry a relative, but I tell you, if you do not marry a relative, you cannot marry anyone at all - we are all related!

It is not refuted by secular science, they agree that we are all related. A woman is related to the man even before they are married, because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve - or, narrowing it down even more - descendants of Noah. The law that forbade close marriage - such as brother/sister, mother/son, father/daughter, etc, was not given to Moses until Leviticus 18-20.

Since marriage was a man for a woman, (Genesis 2) in the beginning, the law was not broken - it had not yet been put into effect. If you recall, Abraham was actually married to his half-sister, Sarah, (See Genesis 20:12) and had twice tried to pass her off as his sister. Now, it is true that in today's world, close marriages would cause physical deformities.

However, Adam and Eve originally had perfect bodies. Since their bodies were closer to "perfection," their children were closer than we are today. Meaning, if they reproduced, the deformities would not occur. Since Cain was the first generation from Adam, he would have received the least amount of imperfect genes. It was not considered incest yet because God had not yet placed the Law into effect until there were enough humans to not have to have close marriages.

During the time of Adam and Eve, close intermarriage was common. The mutations within the genes only increase over time - so around 2,500-3,000 years later, laws against this were put into place, since it was no longer necessary, there were enough people to not have close marriages. So, who was Cain's wife? Either his sister or his niece, but most assume his sister.

The issue arises only because in today's society, the worldview has changed, and the world views it as a bad thing. But we, as Christians, need to look at what God has to say about the matter. Since secularists do not base their worldview on the Bible, the answers, which are quite easy, are blind to them.

I trust that answered the question of those who had been asking or wondering. Was it wrong then? No. Is it wrong now? Of course. What changed? Population increased, and the Ceremonial Law was put into effect. For The Love of Money...

At any given day of the week, several entries are ready to be written. This one is written as per request. The intention of this entry is not fallacious in nature, but merely informative and insightful. What is the topic? Love of Money. It is evident that throughout history, prevailing up to today, there is a love of money among men and women. What does God tells us about the love of money? Let's take a look.

1st Timothy 6:10 says, "For the love of money is a root of all evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." Understand that the intention of this entry is not to point fingers at anyone, but to inform on what some have asked me to write about, "The Love of Money."

Paul calls the love of money the "root of all evil." Is this true? It wasn't an opinion, it was a Biblical fact. It is an often misquoted verse, in which people say, "Money is the root of all evil." That is not what the scriptures say. It says, "For the LOVE OF MONEY is the root of all evil." The Love of Money, not Money itself. Having Money does not make a person evil.

Scripture does not devote much time to the love of money, but even though it is mentioned but a few times, it should not be taken lightly. The Laws of Moses were strict to the point that if we stole from other and sold their possessions, if we hoarded money, there were consequences. Colossians 3:5 illustrates this point.

"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry." In other words, put off all your former ways, including a love of money. Paul warned us about the love of money in the end times.

"People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy..." (1st Timothy 3:2) Paul goes on to describe the 29 Signs within Man - signs of the End Times. Are people lovers of money today? Of course! It is evident in the world around us.

God warns us to turn from our ways, so that swift judgment does not follow. What does God truly think about money involved in evil acts? Well, let us take a look at what Jesus has said. John 2:13-17 says, "When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers sold doves he said, 'Get these out of here! Stop making my Father's house a market place!' His disciples remembered that it is written: 'My devotion for your house, O Lord, burns in me like a fire.' [Psalm 69:9]"

If Jesus was perfect, why did he get mad? He had what is called Righteous Anger. As the prophecy said, "My devotion [zeal] for your house, O Lord, burns in me like a fire." In other words, My devotion to you, when tested, ignites. You do not make church a marketplace. It is God's House of Worship, not a place to sell livestock and other such things.

Since the people who wanted to sell things had a love of money, they went so far as to sell - in God's Temple! So how does God wants us to live, if we have a love of money? If one claims to be a Christian, then we must follow this: "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." (Ephesians 4:22-24)

Does this mean we are to achieve what the New Agers call "Christ-Consciousness?" No. It means we are to be Christian! The Word Christian means "Christ-Like." Paul was not making a suggestion, he was giving a commandment from God: Put off your former way of life. If we put money before God, we are not only disobeying what he's told us through Paul, through Jesus Christ, we are disobeying the First Commandment.

The First Commandment says, "Have no gods before [God]." Yes, we are to take each commandment at face value. But there's a deeper meaning. It also means, "Put God first." Can we say that we put God before money? We should be able to. It is not abstruse. So, if we are lovers of money, what do we do? If we can see that we put money before God, then it becomes an issue.

He calls us to turn from our ways. What if you are not Christian? Dear friends, if you have not accepted that Jesus of Nazareth, who lived in the 1st Century, was Crucified, and then resurrected three days after his death, is not the Messiah promised not only to the Jews - but to the world - I would urge you to do so. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me." (John 14:6)

Those who do not believe have scoffed and say, "What makes you think your way is the only way?" We know because of God's Word. What we read in God's Word agrees with what we see in God's World. The historical, scientific, and spiritual evidence for God and Jesus is overwhelming. Does it take faith? Yes.

What about those who say, "I have never seen or heard God, therefore, there is no God"? Well, be that as it may, a response would be, "Have you ever met George Washington? [No.] Have you ever seen a picture of him? [Well, Paintings, but-] I've seen paintings of God. [But we have Documents that prove he was real.]"

We have documents that prove God is real. It proves its truth to us continually, if we'll only listen. Have you  So what does he call us to do? If you believe that Jesus is Lord, savior, that he died and rose from the dead three days later, and have confessed with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved. (Romans 10:9) Ask God for forgiveness of your sins, and turn to him - I cannot change you, only he can. I can merely try to help.

Thank you for taking the time to read this entry of "The Truth." I do realize that some of the more recent entries seem forthcoming, but in these times, we need to be forthcoming - we cannot afford to withhold truth any longer.

When a writer, used by God, sees the fruits of his work, his heart is made glad. If God has ever used me to help you, and feedback, stories, the like, is always appreciated. If a change has not happened, then I pray you continue reading in the days ahead, and that your life will be touched. You can email vexx801@yahoo.com or visit the facebook page for The Truth. Ever Hear of the Urim and the Thummim?

Not many have. We do not often hear about what is called the "Urim and the Thummim," because like many other Biblical oddities, it is highly misunderstood, and therefore is not often popularized. In this entry, we will look at a "Biblical Oddity." (Photo credit to: BibleandScience.com)

I always enjoy writing about things found in the Bible that to some are highly controversial, forcing me to do much research, as well as things that are not very well-known. For example, to the average church-goer, how many people could tell you what a Urim and a Thummim is, unless they've looked into it? Well, that's the intention of these type of entries - to inform you, and give insight.

That said, let's investigate. The dictionary's definition says, "objects, possibly made of metal or precious stones and inscribed with symbols, worn in the breastplate [breastpiece] of the high priest and used, perhaps like lots, to determine God's response to a question answerable by 'yes' or 'no.'" Precisely.

The Urim and the Thummim were both stones worn by Priests - they gave a yes/no answer to the people of Israel. When the answer was yes, one stone would light up - literally light up, like a light bulb. If the answer was no, the other would light up - and when the High Priest came out of the Tabernacle, all of Israel could see which was lit - what the answer was.

What does God's Word have to tell us about this fascinating topic? Exodus 28:30 is the first to mention this. Now, God had been giving Israel laws at Mount Sinai - he had just given specifications for The Ark of The Covenant, the Lampstand, The Tabernacle, the Altar, and the Courtyard. Chapter 28 is the specifications for Priestly Garments.

Exodus 28:30 says, "Also put Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece, so they may be over Aaron's heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord. Thus Aaron will always bear the means of making decisions for the Israelites over his heart before the Lord." When Aaron and his Sons were finally ordained in Leviticus 8:8, "[Moses] placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece."

When Moses was nearing the end of his life, it was decided that Joshua would succeed Moses. God told Moses to have him ordained by Eleazar. "He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions from him by inquiring of the Urim and Thummim before the Lord." (Numbers 27:21a) Henceforth, the Urim and the Thummim were used by the Levites, the order of the Priests.

The Urim and Thummim are again mentioned in Deuteronomy 33:8. In Judges 1:1, most assume that since Israelites did not directly speak with God, the must have asked using the Urim and the Thummim. However, if the Urim and Thummim only gave yes and no answers, this is probably not the case, however, not improbable.

Consequently, since it was not always used by priests, by the time of David, it was carried in an Ephod. An ephod is "a richly embroidered, apronlike vestment having two shoulder straps and ornamental attachments for securing the breastplate, worn with a waistband by the high priest." (1st Samuel 14:3; 23:9)

The stones are not spoken of until after the Exile. Ezra writes a list of the 42,360 Israelites who had returned form Exile, having been invaded by Babylon years before. Ezra 2:62-63 says, "These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. The governor ordered them not to eat of any of the most sacred food until there was a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim." Nehemiah 7:65 repeats this passage.

The Urim and the Thummim are not mentioned beyond Nehemiah and Ezra. It is assumed by most scholars that the stones that the stones were lost or destroyed after the time of King David when the Babylonians invaded Israel, Although Hosea, one of the prophets, tells us later on, "For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones [Urim and Thummim], without ephod or household gods." (Hosea 3:4)

Since Ezra and Nehemiah refer to the stone as if it has not existed for quite some time, most Biblical Scholars also agree that the Urim and Thummim had probably lost its use a while before David's rule, since the objects were, in a sense, replaced by the prophets. How can we understand the two stones?

1st Samuel 14:41 says, "Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, 'Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault, respond with the Thummim,' Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared." Scholars believe this passage to be the key to understanding these objects.

By using objects whose function was made right by God, divination, the attempt is made to identify a sinner through the Urim and Thummim, by continually splitting people into two different groups, proceeding to identify which group contained the sinner. It is believed that the Urim and Thummim were not consulted by the common Israelite, but by people of prominent figures, such as Kings, Generals, the like. The only questions asked were those that would benefit Israel.

The Urim and Thummim are also used by the Mormon Religion. Joseph Smith Jr, was is the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Smith claimed that an angel named Moroni told him about "Golden Plates," containing the Urim and Thummim. While some Mormons claim that their beliefs are based on the Bible, that claim is not held, as The Book of the Mormon compared alongside God's Word is, bluntly, factitious.

What do "Urim" and "Thummim" mean? Urim and Thummim can be translated as "Light and Perfection." Urim also means doctrina, or revelation, whereas Thummim also means veritas, the latin word for truth. So, "Doctrine and Truth," or "Revelation and Truth."

On another note, according to the Jewish Encyclopedia, in order for the Urim and Thummim to give an answer, it was first necessary for the individual asking the question to stand facing the high priest, fully dressed, and vocalize the question briefly and in a simple way, although it wasn't exactly necessary for it to be loud enough for anyone else to hear the question.

Whatever the case may be, we can understand that these objects were held in great importance from the time of Moses to the time of King David. Where are they now? Destroyed, perhaps, or lost. We may never discover, on this side of life.I pray that this entry of "The Truth" has been informative and insightful. You can email vexx801@yahoo.com or visit the facebook page if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Take Care - and God Bless. Troy Hillman

Science in Brief: Scientific Facts of the Bible

This is the first entry in a new series. Not a day-to-day series, but an on/off series, along the same vein as the Book Overviews, where they are published every once in a while. It has come to my attention that an entry of this subject needed to be written.

Why? Many people have issues with the Bible, usually the same questions which have easy answers, but the problem is that when some Christians are questioned about their faith, they cannot defend them. I am not saying that it is the case with all Christians, but it is a issue in our lives, we need to be able to defend our faith.

The defense of faith is called Apologetics. I am an Apologist - one who defends their faith. The cogency of this topic is meant to be informative, yet decisive. Before we go any further, I would like to give a few words and examples. Creationists believe the Genesis Account. The fact that God created in six, literal days, that there was a flood that covered the Earth, and that the Earth is approx 6,000 Years Old. Some have differing views, but that is the generally accepted Creationist View.

Yes, we will get to Biblical Verses that show scientific facts - thousands of years before discovered or proven. Let's look into some vocabulary first. Presuppositions. The definition? Our most basic beliefs about reality, the rules of interpretation that we generally assume at the outset before any investigation containing evidence.

The point in defining that word is - everyone in the world has presuppositions about things. The issue with presenting Apologetics more often than not is not due to a lack of evidence. There is plenty of evidence that proves God. He gives us evidence, we find evidence, evidence all around. The issue is the evidential arguments.

Evidence by itself cannot always resolve a conflict. It isn't because people do not have enough evidence, but it is a person's presuppositions that tells them what to make of it. A secular scientist may look at the world around us and say, "It happened by chance," whereas a Creationist will say, "God created everything." That is what we call a worldview.

How we approach evidence with different presuppositions is how we will interpret it. While some Evolutionists say, "let's talk about this on neutral ground." The problem? There is no neutral ground. By meeting on "neutral ground," you are from the outset denying the truth of God's Word. Remember this: When asked to come to a neutral ground, They are not neutral, and you should not be either.

Paul tells us in Titus 1:9, "...[hold] fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict." When we enter into a debate, bear in mind that these people are also created by God, and deserve the same respect you would give someone else - do not assume they have the same presuppositions, therefore getting angry when they do not agree.

However, consider this: Only God's Word, the Bible, provides the preconditions for the intelligibility for man's reasoning and experience. If God's Word was untrue, it would be impossible to prove anything. Think of this. When a Evolutionist says, "Creation is a lie," or, "Did you hear about that murder yesterday," we ask, "Why care? According to evolution, we are all chemicals, merely evolved pond scum. We have no moral system, no set for laws."

They may respond, "Well, because its wrong." Based on what? If Evolution is true, that means we have no moral authority. We make our own rules, for ourselves. Who is anyone else to say what is right and what is wrong. However, when people say that things such as lying, stealing, cheating, murder, etc are wrong, they are borrowing from Christianity. That's God's Law.

It originated with God, and because of God, we have a lawful universe. Absolute Morality comes from God, because if God created us, He has the right to set rules. Just as if our parents set rules for us once we are born. If God did not make rules, then why not make our own rules? Critics argue, "The God of the Old Testament killed innocent people. He contradicted himself." First of all, that's a mistranslation. The KJV Bible said, "Thou shall not kill." It was a mistranslation, it is "Do not murder." There is a difference between killing and murder - murder is illegal killing, whereas killing in self-defense of say, a nation, is drastically different.

I do not condone killing, merely stating that too large of a case is made over the murder. It says murder, not killing overall. To the skeptics, based on your worldview, where we evolved and have no moral standards, apart from God, how can you decide what is "good" and who is "innocent?" Only God knows the heart and mind. Why should evolutionists be angry about such things, if it is only a "behavioral inconsistency?"

The things in the Universe may not adhere to his laws, but nevertheless, we still have laws through God. If we evolved, we would have no moral standard. What about Relativism? The definition, "All things are relative, there are no absolutes," is a contradiction. Relativism is a contradiction. Why? Because by stating that nothing is absolute, you are making an absolute statement. So when someone tells you about Relativism, ask, "Are you absolutely certain?"

Some skeptics will say, where is the evidence for God? I cannot see him, therefore there is no God. Well, consider this: two people are having a debate about air. The critic claims, "Air does no exist, I cannot see it." The contradiction is that the critic is using air to make a claim against air. In the same way, critics of the Bible must use Biblical Presuppositions to make arguments against the Bible, therefore using God's Word.

The argument is the same for love, for any emotion. "Love does not exist because I cannot see it." However, consider, love is a feeling. just as air can be felt and the effects can be seen, God can be felt, and the effects of God, The Bible, and Jesus are clearly seen. The effects of the fall of man are also clearly seen in creation, as it deteriorates.

Skeptics say, "The Bible has too many contradictions." Now, the typical response is, "I don't accept that, I don't agree with you. Show me, and I'll explain it." While that's a good response, there needs to be more. "If it did have contradictions, in your worldview, why would that be wrong?" More often than not, these so-called contradictions are mentioned because they do not agree that the Bible fits their worldview.

Now, with all that said, we will take a look at how Science Confirms the Bible. Remember that this is not an in-depth study of all the science found in the Bible, how Noah's Ark, Creation, The Deluge (The Flood), and many other things are supported by science. This is a look at scientific facts. (Table credit to WayOfTheMaster.com)

There are also many other scientific facts that support the Bible. For example, in an entry a while back, I covered, "What is the 'Empty Space' behind the North Star?," where Job explained, "He spreads our the northern skies over empty space." (Job 26:7a) NASA only in more recent decades discovered empty space. If God did not tell Job about this, how then could he know a scientific fact if he had no means of knowing this, aside from God, and discovered it thousands of years before scientists?

Also, "During the devastating Black Death of the fourteenth century, patients who were sick or dead were kept in the same rooms as the rest of the family. People often wondered why the disease was affecting so many people at one time. They attributed these epidemics to ‘bad air’ or ‘evil spirits.’ However, careful attention to the medical commands of God as revealed in Leviticus would have saved untold millions of lives. Arturo Castiglione wrote about the overwhelming importance of this biblical medical law: ‘The laws against leprosy in Leviticus 13 may be regarded as the first model of sanitary legislation’ (A History of Medicine)." Grant R. Jeffery, The Signature of God With all these truths revealed in Scripture, how could a thinking person deny that the Bible is supernatural in origin? There is no other book in any of the world’s religions (Vedas, Bhagavad-Gita, Koran, Book of Mormon, etc.) that contains scientific truth. In fact, they contain statements that are clearly unscientific. Hank Hanegraaff said, "Faith in Christ is not some blind leap into a dark chasm, but a faith based on established evidence." (Way of The Master.com)

As you can see, Biblical Truth - Creation, can be concluded logically, scientifically, and informatively. You do not need to philosophical, scientific, or theological to believe any of The Bible. But what we do need, to be saved from the Day of Wrath, which we know is coming, as the signs of the End Times (cars, airplanes, Atom Bomb, Rebirth of Israel, War, Famine, Disease, etc.) clearly show, is Jesus Christ. Yes, Jesus - the only person in all of history who has left such an impact on the World and revolutionized it like no other.

How can we be saved from fire, from Hell? I promise you, it is a very real place. It is not a beach vacation, it is not a place I wish anyone to go to. If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that Jesus is risen from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9) He asks us to ask for forgiveness of our sins, turn from our ways, and follow his commands. There is a total of 613 Commandments in the Bible - what a gracious Creator we have, who told us to follow Ten. Jesus is the WAY, the TRUTH, and THE LIFE. He himself said this. (John 14:6)

I could tell you to look at the evidence for hours. But if you have presuppositions and a different worldview, you are not always going to see the evidence the same way. When countered, you may use a "rescuing device," and it is good for Christians to be able to use "rescuing devices," as well as Apologetics. Always keep in mind that when we do use Apologetics, we are to defend in a kind and humble manner, not always as straightforward and direct as I have been, but I have so that you may understand directly. So I ask that you take into consideration all that you have read, and if you have questions/comments, feel free to email vexx801@yahoo.com, or the facebook page. God Bless You, Dear Reader. Is Joseph in Egyptian History?

For centuries skeptics have claimed that the Genesis account of Joseph cannot be true because there is no evidence. Many scholars believe otherwise, and in this entry, we will look at why. In fact, there is MUCH evidence to support Joseph. First, let's take a look at the Biblical Account of Joseph.

The account of Joseph spans Genesis 37-50. To read an outline of the account, see the entry, "God Can Bring Good out of Bad Situations." Generally, Joseph was the son of Jacob, and great-grandson of Abraham. He was one of twelve brothers, and was Jacob's favorite. Jealous of how he was treated, they sold him into slavery to Ishmaelites, and told their father that Joseph had been eaten.

In reality, Joseph was taken and sold by the Ishmaelites at Egypt, sold to one of Pharaoh's officials, Potiphar. He served Potiphar faithfully, but Potiphar's wife, day after day, tried to seduce Joseph. "And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her." But one day, she tore his cloak from him, and told Potiphar that Joseph had tried to come onto her. (Genesis 37, 39)

Joseph was jailed for a few years. He served the jailer faithfully, who had under Joseph's care all those held in prison. Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh's cup-bearer and baker. Both interpretations came true - the Baker was impaled, and the cup-bearer restored to his position. He told Joseph that he would mention him to Pharaoh. He forgot. (Genesis 40)

Two Years later, the Pharaoh had disturbing dreams, and none of his men could interpret them. The cup-bearer remembered Joseph, and had him brought in. He interpreted his two dreams, with God's help, and told him that there would be Seven Years of Plentiful Food, but Seven Years of Famine would follow suite. These 14 years came to pass. (Genesis 41)

After Joseph had given him the interpretation, he named him "Zaphenath-Paneah," second only to Pharaoh. He put him in charge of the grain storage, giving him free-reign to build storage areas. Now, there is more to the account - Joseph's brothers came for grain, and after a few visits, he finally revealed his identity as Joseph to them, and had Jacob, his brothers, and all his family move to Egypt with him. He died at the age of 110, and was put in a coffin in Egypt. But before he died, he had the Israelites promise to bring his bones to the Promised Land. (Genesis 50:25)

This was fulfilled in Joshua 24:32. Now, what of the evidence? What of the proof of Joseph? Let's take a look. For years, scholars have studied the subject of Israelites in Egypt. From all findings, we can conclude that their names in Egyptian may be a bit different than in Hebrew - meaning, if you call me Troy here in the United States, I may go under a different name in Egypt.

So who in all of Egyptian history could possibly line up with Joseph? Imhotep. Imhotep was popularized by "The Mummy" and its sequels, remakes of older thriller films. However, unlike in the movies, Imhotep played a much larger role in Egyptian History. Imhotep was second, only to Pharaoh Djozer. (also spelled Zozer).

Though many scholars have issues with the chronology, we trust God's Word. So what does God's Word say? Exodus 12:40 says, "Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years. At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord's divisions left Egypt." Now, the stay in Egypt could have been between 180-430 years, as some translations say, "lived in Egypt and Canaan," indicating the time of Abraham. However, 430 years in Egypt between Joseph and Moses is generally accepted, though not by all.

If the Exodus took place in 1446 BC, and Joseph brought his family to Egypt during the Seven Years of Famine, it would place Joseph about 1876 BC - meaning that the first seven years would have begun in 1883 BC. While many historians say Imhotep and Djoser existed in the 11th Century, while others say 27th Century BC, it is a "educated guess." The point is, there are many similarities between Joseph and Imhotep. Let's take a look.

Now, we can see plenty of similarities between Joseph and Imhotep. Many scholars accept that Imhotep was another Egyptian name of Joseph, as well as Zaphenath-Paneah. We will touch on that in a moment. Pharaoh Djoser had issued a decree, now shown as an inscription on the "Famine Stela" located in Sehel Island on the Nile.

The decree tells of a seven year famine during Pharaoh Djoser's reign and Imhotep's part in the this event. So, where are Imhotep's structures? In Saqarra, Egypt. He built the first pyramid, "The Step Pyramid of Djoser." Very nearby was a building that was used as an "accounting building," an office-type building where people during the seven years would come in and purchase grain.
At the grain bins which are at Saqarra, it has been discovered that there are eleven bins which all connect through tunnels to one central large bin, where Grain was taken from. When grain was removed from the Central Bin, more from one of the eleven would come into it. An interesting fact? There is still some grain at the very bottom of the grain bins.

The fact is, whoever Imhotep was, he interpreted Pharaoh Djoser's dreams, became second in-command of Egypt, helped store up grain at Saqarra, built the Step-Pyramid, and the remains of these structures, which are still pretty intact, can still be found in Egypt. Let's see. Who in the Bible do we know that also did these things? Joseph, son of Jacob. "And the famine was over all the face pf the earth; and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians." (Genesis 41:56) Imhotep also did this.

What does Im-Hotep mean? It means, "The Voice [or Mouth] of Im." The odd thing? There is not Egyptian God named Im. However, centuries later when The Angel of The Lord (Pre-Incarnate Jesus, God) spoke to Moses through the Burning Bush, he told Moses that the Israelites would recognize his named as: "I AM." So could Imhotep mean, "The Voice of I AM?" Zaphenath-Paneah means, "The God Speaks." Very similar. (Exodus 3:2)

Would it disprove the Bible if Joseph was NOT Imhotep? Not at all. We still have plenty of evidence for the Bible. But among these few things, there is still MUCH evidence for Imhotep as Joseph, the Exodus, and many other Biblical accounts. Before he was sold into slavery, Jacob taught Joseph much about the World, about God, about reading and writing Egyptian, and he was a learned man. He proved it over and over to his overseers, and though wrongly accused, he was used to save thousands, if not millions, of people.

"The Famine Stela," Djoser's Pyramid, Storehouses of Grain
In Genesis 41:40 the Pharaoh tells Joseph, "You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders..." In Genesis 41:43-44, we are told, "He had him ride in a chariot as his second-in-command, and people shouted before him. 'Make way!' Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt." Imhotep also had this exact same position.
Is it possible that Joseph was Imhotep, another of his Egyptian names? Yes. Some Egyptians went by more than one name, and not all Egyptian history is recorded. Is it possible that Pharaoh Djoser was the Biblical Pharaoh of Joseph's time? Entirely probable. Are we 100% positive of these things? No. But who else do you know that would perfectly line up the similarities between Imhotep and Joseph? As I said, there is evidence for Joseph aside from all of this.

But if we are to believe that Joseph was Imhotep, then I tell you, the grain "silos" and management building, as well as the pyramid, that Joseph built and run, is located in Saqarra, Egypt. If you have Google Earth, the location is easy to locate. Google Images also has plenty of Images. The Image included in this entry shows not only the decree by Pharaoh Djoser, but the Pyramid built by Joseph and the large, deep Grain Silos, as well as the steps where the Egyptians took the grain down.

Is the account of a Seven Year Famine in Egypt true? Evidence supports that it occurred under Pharaoh Djoser's reign, and was taken care of by his second in-command, Imhotep. There is a high probability that the Biblical Joseph was the Historical Imhotep. I would recommend investigating this yourself, if you are compelled. The Biblical accounts have proven true over and over again, and this is just one of many instances. While this specific instance is in question, there are plenty of others that have been fully proven, and the only question is by those who refuse to accept the evidence.

Also, as aforementioned, Joseph had told the Israelites to take his bones when they left Egypt. (Genesis 50, Joshua 24) At Saqarra, there is an empty tomb underground. While the tomb does not ascribe itself to anyone in particular, all evidence in the chamber seems to indicate that it once housed the body of Imhotep. The tiles in the chamber are of someone of great importance during the reign of Pharaoh Djoser.

A Greek inscription, made centuries after the chamber, tells of a man who was known for many things, including dreams - saying that the man had died in dreams. The interesting thing? Imhotep's body has never been found. If Joseph is Imhotep, then his bones were taken by the Israelites. That is why his body cannot be found in Egypt - because it is in the Promised Land.
If you do believe the Biblical account, and you have never put your trust in God, I would urge you to do so. Romans 10:9 tells us that if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that he is risen from the dead, you will be saved. Belief in God alone cannot save you - it is belief in God as well as accepting Jesus as Savior. He asks that we pray for forgiveness of our sins, and turn from "our ways."

I want to mention one more thing. On September 29, 2009, news broke from Egypt that coins had been found. To quote the ANI article, "Ancient coins bearing the name and image of the biblical Joseph have been found from the Museum of Egypt, contradicting claims made by some historians that coins were not used for trade in olden Egypt." Also, "One coin has an inscription on it, and an image pf a cow symbolizing Pharaoh's dream about the seven fat cows and seven lean cows, and the seven green stalks of grain and seven dry stalks of grain."

Understand that this entry is merely a comparison, it does not prove nor is it our intention to prove that Joseph was Imhotep, but to inform of an intriguing similarity. I pray this entry has proven insightful and meaningful to you.  May God Bless You, Take Care. Troy Hillman

The Ark of the Covenant

What is the Ark of the Covenant? It was a mercy-seat, rather, God's throne on Earth, made of acacia wood. It was built by the Israelites in the desert after the Exodus occurred, and were given instructions - including the Ten Commandments, at Mount Sinai. (Modern-day Jebel el Lawz) You may recognize it from such films as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, returning for a cameo appearance in the more recent Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.

But what about the real Ark of the Covenant? The Ark of the Covenant is first mentioned in Exodus 25:10-22, where God gives Moses the exact instructions on how to build the Ark - to have the ark made of acacia wood, along with two poles to carry it, and an atonement cover (the Mercy Seat) made of pure gold, God's Throne on Earth, where he came to Moses and gave him commandments and talked with him.

Considered the "splendor of Israel" (Lamentations 2:1), the Ark of the Covenant was mentioned over 200 times in the Old Testament. The Ark was usually carried before the army (Numbers 4:5-6, 10:33-36; Psalm 68:1, 132:8), was left in the homes of individuals, sometimes ignored, other times revered - later placed in Solomon's Temple.

After the death of Moses, Joshua was made head of Israel. (1406 BC) When it came time to cross the river Jordan, Joshua was told by God to have the Priests carrying the Ark to go before the People. When they had reached Jordan, the river was in its flood stage, because it was the time of the harvest. "Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away... while the water down [the opposite way] was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho." (Joshua 3:11-17)

After the Israelites had crossed, they not long after came upon Jericho. Jesus, pre-incarnate, came to Joshua, (See entry: Who is the "Angel of the Lord?") telling him to march around the city six days with the Ark of the Covenant, and on the seventh day, blow the trumpets and give a loud shout- and the walls would fall. Joshua listened, and the walls fell. (Joshua 5:13-6:27) We can still see the remains of Jericho today, with the only remaining wall. (God promised Rahab that the wall where she lived would not fall, but all other walls would.)

When the Ark was covered, it was more often than not wrapped in a veil, in "tachash skins," as well as a blue cloth, and was fully concealed from those around it, even those who carried it - though the poles were visible, to carry. Over the course of time, the Ark of the Covenant went through a long journey.

It was captured by Philistines, (1st Samuel 4:3-11) but was finally recovered, after the sent it back. (1st Samuel 5:7-8; 6) used in the days of King Saul, though we are told that Saul did not consult God before battle (1st Chronicles 13:1-13). It went here and there throughout King David's reign, before coming to rest in the Temple after built by King Solomon.

However, that wasn't the end. in 586 BC, the Babylonians invaded Israel, and once they took Jerusalem, destroyed Solomon's temple. The Ark has not been seen since, though some suggest that it was destroyed, while yet others suggest that it was taken by Nebuchadnezzar. Because of this, the rebuilt Temple did not include the Ark in the Holy of Holies room.

In the New Testament, in Hebrews 9:4, we are told that behind the second curtain in the Temple was the Holy Place, "which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant."

We are shown one more glimpse of the Ark of the Covenant. Revelation 11:19 says, "Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant." So where is the Ark of the Covenant today? Many theories abound. Some say that the Ark is at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, just beneath the Mount itself, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims to have the Ark, saying that the Ark was brought to Ethiopia by Menelik I with divine assistance, while other countries, such as France, the UK, Ireland, Japan, and South Africa claim to have it. Supposedly, when Queen Elizabeth II visited Ethiopia, she claimes to have seen the Ark.

Ron Wyatt claimed to have discovered the Ark beneath the site of Jesus' crucifixion, and that when his blood was spilled, it went down the cracks when the "rock split," and landed on top of the Mercy Seat, therefore initiating the New Covenant. (For Ron Wyatt's finding, go to ArkDiscovery.com) The book of the Apocrypha, 2 Maccabees 2:4-10, seems to support its location as Mt. Nebo.

It says, "Further, this document records that, prompted by a divine message, the prophet gave orders that the Tent of Meeting and the Ark should go with him. Then he went away to the mountain from the top of which Moses saw God's promised land. [Mt. Nebo] When he reached the mountain, Jeremiah found a cave-dwelling; he carried the tent, the ark, and the incense-altar into it, then blocked up the entrance.

Some of his companions came to mark out the way, but were unable to find it. When Jeremiah learned of this he reprimanded them. 'The place shall remain unknown,' he said, 'until God finally gathers his people together and shows mercy to them. Then the Lord will bring these things to light again, and the glory of the Lord will appear with the cloud, as it was seen both in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed that the shrine might be worthily consecrated.'" Some claim to have seen a copy of the Ark of the Covenant at Mt. Nebo.

Now, we must be very careful when we read the Apocrypha. (For reasons why, see entry: "How Do We Know the 66 Books in the Bible are the Right Books?") Overall, scholars generally agree that if God wants the Ark to be found, he will reveal it in due time. But even with such overwhelming evidence, as if we do not have enough already, there still remains unbelievers, and there will.

Whatever the case, the Ark of the Covenant proves fascinating to say the least. Though some get confused between Noah's Ark, the "lifeboat" that saved humanity, and the Ark of the Covenant, which was God's Mercy Seat, it remains one of the most sought after archaeological finds in history. Tehre have been many theories and interesting discoveries, and while I have my own opinion on where it is, agreeing with a certain finding, I will not make my opinion known - as it is not my opinion, but what the Bible tells us, that should be shared.

What can we learn from the Ark? The Ark of the Covenant was a portable box that was constructed per divine instruction. The Ark contained the original Ten Commandments given to Moses, as well as a few other objects of interest. The Ark, for many years, served as the focus of the place of God, and was later put into the Temple. God showed his power through the Ark various times, and some tested him. The Ark of the Covenant was lost when the Babylonians destroyed Solomon's Temple. Where it is now, we are not entirely sure.

I trust this entry has proven helpful and insightful. For more information on subjects such as these, evidence of God, Jesus, and the Bible, and a plethora of other subjects, feel free to comment below, email vexx801@yahoo.com, or visit the facebook page. Take Care, and God Bless. Troy Hillman

What is the Importance of Petra, The Stone City?

What is Petra? Petra, Jordan is a location that tourists often gravitate to. It was established sometime in the 6th Century BC by the Nabataeans, and was carved out of rock around 1200 BC, and is located on the slope of Mount Hor, which, coincidentally, is supposedly where Moses' brother Aaron was buried. (Photo credit to: Jigsaw Earth, World Historical Sites)

Petra was re-discovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. BBC describes Petra as one of the "top 40 places to see before you die." What an amazing archaeological feat it is, indeed. The city is in essence, a fortress - surrounded by hard-to-navigate narrow passageways with towering, winding rock walls.

Known for being a "rose-red city," the water conduits system is stunning. The area at the time of the Nabataeans was known for flash-floods, and by making use of dams, cisterns, and water conduits, the flow of water throughout Petra was controlled. Petra has been in popular media - films. You may have seen it as the location of the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, or perhaps in the more recent Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It has been used in a plethora of films.

What Biblical relevance does Petra have? It has a very important role in the future - but let's take a look at what the Bible tells us about the past. The area where Petra is located was assigned to the Horites, who were the predecessors of the Edomites. Petra was commonly mistake as Sela, the capital of Edom. However, Sela (meaning, the rock) is located nearby at Mount Hor.

Petra was later carved out, as stated, by the Nabataeans. The custom of burying the dead and offering worship carried out by the Nabataeans may have been derived from the Horites. Petra, after a few centuries, fell under Roman rule, where it declined. Egyptians visited Petra in the 13th Century, and it was known, but went largely unnoticed until the re-discovery, as stated, in 1812.

But Petra, aside from being merely an attraction, has a greater value. I've mentioned its capability as a fortress. As we have gone over time and time again, The End Times are near. The Rapture, The Seven Year Tribulation, the Millennium, Eternity. What role does Petra play in the End Times? Well, when I wrote the three-part series, "The End Times," I neglected to put in several things. Not one purpose, but I had not yet known about them.

Does that negate the truth of those three entries? Certainly not. What I neglected to put it in, due to my lack of knowledge on this particular event, was the Remnant of Israel. Revelation 12:14 mentions a "woman," who flees towards the mountains but is chased by the dragon. In other words, The Remnant of Israel is chased to the mountains by the Antichrist - after he has become indwelled by Satan.

Three and a half years into the Seven-Year Tribulation, The Antichrist will be assassinated. Some think by a sword, others think by gun. It could be numerous things, but Revelation 13:3 says, "One of the heads of the beast seemed to have a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the [Antichrist]." Bear in mind that yes, Revelation 12 comes before 13. However, the chronology of the book of Revelation is not concurrent all the way through, as is pointed out to us, and we are left to make the connection.

What is the connection? After the Antichrist is resurrection and indwelled (possessed) by Lucifer, he will go to the rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem, and desecrate it, proclaiming himself as God. After this, he will begin a genocide of the Jews, much like Hitler did during World War II, only we are told it will be worse.

So what happens? The Remnant of the Jews are given a Moses-like figure to lead them to the mountains - to Petra. Because of the fortified walls of the city, Petra will be safe from attack, and we are told that the Jewish Remnant will be supernaturally protected. (From Christian writer Jack Kelley:)

"There are several references that when combined lead scholars to conclude that at the beginning of the Great Tribulation, believing Jews will flee to Petra in southern Jordan, where they’ll be supernaturally protected by the Lord. In Matt. 24:16 the Lord warned those in Judea (Israel) to flee to the mountains when they see the Abomination of Desolation.  The closest mountains are to the east in southern Jordan where Petra is located. Rev. 12:14 tells of Satan pursuing them across the desert as they flee to a place prepared for them.

This desert lies between Israel and the mountains of southern Jordan around the northern and eastern shores of the Dead Sea. And in Isaiah 63: 1-6 there’s a description of the Lord coming from Bozrah in Edom after single handedly defeating His enemies there. Bozrah is the region of Edom where Petra is located. This indicates that when the time comes the Lord will declare Jordan off limits to the anti-Christ and give His people refuge there."

Daniel 11:41 also tells us that Edom, Moab, and the leaders of Ammon will be spared from the Antichrist. Edom and Moab had occupied Modern Jordan. Yes, Matthew 24:15-16 tells of a place of refuge for the Remnant of Israel. Carefully studied, Petra is the probable - as well as ideal - location. Looking at this from a non-biblical standpoint, Jordan currently has a peace treaty with Israel, and as I said, Petra would be an ideal location for refuge.

Many things point to Petra as the place of refuge for the Remnant. Led by the Moses-like figure, they will re-locate to their place of refuge where they will have plenty of water (studies show that Petra's water conduit system is very effective), and will be fed manna, just as Moses and the Israelites were more than 3,000 years ago. (1446-1370's BC)

Revelation 12:14 tells us that the Remnant is "given the two wings of a great eagle, so that [they] may fly to the place prepared for [them] where [they] would be taken care of for [1,260 Days.]" Revelation 12:6 tells us 1,260 Days - 3 and a half years, confirming that this Exodus will occur at the start of the Second Half of the Tribulation, also known as "The Great Tribulation." They will remain there until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ at the end of the 7 Years.

While Petra may have declined under Roman rule, the Jewish occupation to come will certainly prove that the Red City is still ready for whatever the Antichrist can throw at it. Many Biblical Scholars support this, and it is the most logical place of exodus. I pray that this information has been insightful and filled with understanding. The Transfiguration

Though I have covered this topic before, I have not devoted a full entry to it, and felt that it was time to examine The Transfiguration of Jesus. What is a transfiguration? The dictionary describes it as "the supernatural and glorified change in appearance of Jesus on the mountain." They hit the nail on the head. A "transfiguration" is a change in shape or appearance. (Picture Credit to: Raphael, ©1520)

Frankly, I love hearing this account. Probably because of people involved - Jesus, Moses, Elijah, Peter, James, and John. Now, where does this event take place? None of the gospels specifically mention which mountain, but since the 3rd Century Christians pointed out Mount Tabor, that is the traditional site, although some, such as RT Frances, have noted that Mount Hermon is the closest to Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus was in the previous chapter of Matthew.

So what's the general idea? Jesus, Peter, James, and John go up in a mountain. They see Moses, who's been dead for about 1,400 years, (Deuteronomy 34:5) and Elijah, who was taken to Heaven a few hundred years before. (2nd Kings 2:11) They come and talk with Jesus about his upcoming death, and God comes down in a cloud saying, "This is my Son."

In other words, he just threw off all speculations about who Jesus was. When God Almighty speaks, it is good to listen. So let's take a look at these Biblical accounts, see what they tell us about this spectacular event. Thomas Aquinas, an Italian priest, had considered The Transfiguration to be the "Greatest Miracle," in that it happened to Christ himself.

Let's take a look at Matthew 17:1-9. Verses 2-5 say, "There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, 'Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters - one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.' While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!'"

Verses 6-7 go on to say, "When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them.'Get up.' he said. 'Don't be afraid.' When they looked up, they saw no one but Jesus." Jesus proceeded to instruct the three disciples not to mention this to anyone "until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." So they listened, but did not understand until later.

Mark gives his account, which was told to him by Peter, in Mark 9:2-8. The account is mostly the same, though verse three gives another vivid description: "His clothes became a dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them." Luke also speaks of The Transfiguration.

Luke 9:28-36 gives the same account, though with certain details. "As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him."

John may also have alluded to The Transfiguration, though it may be a general idea of Christ. John 1:14, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." That may be an obscure reference, but it is true that John saw the glory of Jesus - he was a witness of the Transfiguration.

Though he conveyed it to John Mark, who wrote Mark, Peter later wrote about the event. 2nd Peter 1:16-18 says, "For we did nor follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in Power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.' We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain."

So, hearing these accounts, we can gather that it must have been extraordinary to witness. It has been speculated that the senses of the disciples were also transfigured (changed) to see his glory. While it does not change the event, it is interesting.

It is also interesting to note that Jesus is put above Elijah and Moses, two major figures in Judaism. Moses represents the Law, while Elijah represents the Prophets - Jesus was the one who fulfilled what was written about him in "...the Law of Moses, [and] the Prophets..." (Luke 24:44)

Regardless of what deeper meaning this event has, if you take anything away from it, may it be this: God himself proclaims Jesus as his Son. The Transfiguration is the event that shows the glory of Jesus, that shows him in his glorified body. This special event shared with the inner ring of the three disciples was a confirmation to them that Jesus was indeed, the Messiah that was prophesied to come.

Peter, James and John were witnesses to this spectacular event - and it is so often overlooked. It need not be. Jesus was also proclaimed as the Son of God in Psalm 2:7, Proverbs 30:4, Luke 1:32, and Matthew 3:17, the first two instances from prophets, the next from the angel Gabriel, and in Matthew by God himself at the Baptism of Jesus, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

While the miracles of walking on water, disappearing from a crowd, raising the dead, healing, multiplying food, changing weather, and many others happen to others, The Transfiguration miracle happens to Jesus - and it proves without a doubt that he truly is the Son of God. If you have never put your trust in God, I would urge you to do so - he warns us that the time is near for the end.

How do you put your trust in God? Accept that we have all sinned, all broken his commandments, that we cannot pay the penalty ourselves, but that Jesus paid our fine for us, so that the Judge's [God] sentence would only be carried out if those in the courtroom [humanity] chose not to follow him. "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me." (Revelation 3:20)

Will you open the door for the only one who can save us? He's asking us to open our hearts and let him in - change occurs when you accept Jesus - but not always an immediate change, so do not always expect an overwhelming emotion. Confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and if you believe in your heart that he is risen from the dead, and ask forgiveness for your sins (we sin daily, so it is good to ask for forgiveness daily), you will be saved.

I thank you for taking the time to read this entry of "The Truth." Feedback is always appreciated, you can contact me at vexx801@yahoo.com or drop by the facebook page for more information and pictures. Take Care, and May God Bless. Troy Hillman

The Five Crowns in Heaven

Ever heard of them? In recent times, to the common man, the "Five Crowns" are unheard of. Not to all, but many. Others know of the five crowns. Whether you personally have heard of them or not, let us take a look at these crowns - how we earn them, and what they are. (Photo credit to: Dallas Vintage)

Do you think Christians believe by blind faith? Many do, and Jesus says "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (John 20:29) We walk by faith, not by sight. But you do not need to have "blind faith" as some call it, to believe. Look around you! Something intelligent designed everything around us, science has a law that everything must have a creator - but because God IS the creator, he did not need to be created, for he is outside linear time. There is much archaeological, historical, physical, and spiritual evidence to prove the Bible.

Put plainly, after you become a true follower of Christ, you also gain the capability to have rewards in Heaven. But what other the rewards? Is your mansion bigger than the next? Is your robe heavier? Well, one of the upcoming topics I plan to cover is what the Bible gives us description-wise about Heaven. But in this entry, we'll look at the crowns rewarded to the faithful.

The Bible mentions five literal crowns. The Crown of Incorruption, The Crown of Rejoicing, The Crown of Life, The Crown of Glory, and The Crown of Righteousness. Sounds too fantastic to be true, right? Believers being sent to a "mystical place" where they wear white robes and get crowns, living under the reign of Jesus? Nothing is too hard for the Lord.

With God, the impossible becomes possible. None of what the Bible tells us is too hard for the Lord, too great a feat to be accomplished. That said, let's take a look at each Crown and how they can be obtained. Bear in mind that more than one kind of crown can be obtained by any one person.

The Crown of Incorruption. This crown is given to those who live a disciplined life. Mentioned in 1st Corinthians 9:25, "Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last [corruptible crown]; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever [incorruptible crown]." The simple truth: only those who strive in life will get this crown, those who do not, will not.

The Crown of Rejoicing. This crown is given to those who joyously express their faith. I have met many people throughout my life who have done so, and it would not surprise me in the least if they got this crown. 1st Thessalonians 2:19, "For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes..."

Other translations explicitly say "crown of rejoicing." If you do not joyously express your faith, you will not gain the crown, put bluntly. Daniel 12:3 says, "Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever." Many scholars take this to mean, if you lead others to righteousness by expressing your faith, you will receive a crown that will shine like the "brightness of the heavens."

The Crown of Life. James 1:12 says, "Blessed are those who persevere under trial, because when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." The Crown of Life is given to those who are patient, who endure the trials and tribulations in life. Revelation 2:10 says, "...Be faithful even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life." This crown is also referred to as the "Martyr's Crown."

The Crown of Glory. This Crown is given to those who are faithful in ministering to the world. 1st Peter 5:2-4 says, "Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them - not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away."

The Crown of Righteousness. 2nd Timothy 4:8 says, "Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." This crown is for all those who long for the return of Jesus. Those who do not believe that Jesus will return or do not care will not receive this crown.

That, dear readers, are the five crowns. But are these the only rewards in heaven? Certainly not. Let's learn a little more about these rewards. Revelation 3:11 says, "I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown." In other words, we are to guard ourselves, to be on our guard and to continue in faithfulness.

Crowns can be lost. (Matthew 6:2, 2nd John 1:7-8) However, as stated, if you stay faithful to God, we will not lose rewards in Heaven. Revelation 4:4 says, "... They were all clothed in white and had gold crowns on their heads." Jesus himself wore a crown of thorns at his death.

However, when he returns, John tells us that "on his head were many crowns." (Revelation 19:11-19) When Christ returns, he will show his true standing, as we know him to be the Son of God. There are many scripture references to that fact that crowns and rewards in heaven are for those who overcome, who are victorious. (Philippians 3:12-14, 1st Corinthians 9:24-27, Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21; 21:7)

The Bible teaches that there will be a "reward system" in Heaven. Do not live your life merely for rewards, but know that whatever hardships you may face in life, if you have accepted Jesus as the only one who can save you, have confessed that "Jesus is Lord," believe that he is risen from the dead, and ask God for forgiveness of your sins, you will enter Heaven. God makes it clear that if you do not, you will not enter Heaven.

The crowns are where our works come into play. You have heard it said that works cannot get you into Heaven, and that is true. If you stand before a Judge, and try to explain how you've been a good person, the Judge [God] is going to say, "That's great, but you are on trial because you have broken the law." (The Ten Commandments, which we have all broken.) The only way to get to Heaven, to be saved, is not through Mary, not through false worship of other demi-gods, but by accepting Jesus, accepting the penalty that he paid for us.

However, good works will get rewarded. That's why we are told to "store up our treasures in Heaven." So what can we take away from all of this? Follow Colossians 3:2. "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." That wasn't a suggestion, folks. That was a command from the Word of God. Now, am I telling you that bills should not be paid, you shouldn't worry about raising children or about work? No, what I am telling you is the same thing Christ told us - stop worrying so much about temporal things, and worry about where you're going to spend eternity.

We have got - at the most, due to the sins of Noah's generation, 120 Years to live. We used to have 1,000, but we ruined that for ourselves. After that, what next? Will your next conscience thought be at Heaven - or Hell? Ask yourself. An atheist could stand before God and say, "I don't believe in you." God could turn around and say, "I don't believe in you!" Of course, I do not think that would exactly happen, but we need to be mindful of everything we do, for in everything we do, we ought to honor God. (See entry: What does it mean to walk by faith?)

The Miracles of Jesus (Part Four)

The great conqueror Napoleon once said, "I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creation of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him." (Photo credit to Visual Bible International, Gospel of John starring Henry Ian Cusick, ©2003)

If Napoleon, a man well-known in history, can make such bold claims about Jesus of Nazareth, and knew the claims to be true - we may also know that the claims of the Gospels are true. They claim divine inspiration, and time after time God proves the Truth of his Word to us. Albert Einstein, world-renowned scientist and theorist, had this to say: "As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene....No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life."

Precisely. Unless you outright reject God,  when we read The Bible, we should pray "Open my eyes that I may see the wonderful things in your law." (Psalm 119:18) Each and every time I pray this, God reveals something new to me I had not previously seen or thought about in scripture. Now, there is no guarantee that the same thing will happen to you - but if you read it, knowing that the scriptures are truth, God will reveal himself to you through his Word.

In the last three entries, we covered the Miracles of Jesus concerning: healing, casting out demons and raising the dead to life, food, water, and weather, and today we focus on three miracles of Jesus, classified as "others." This is the final entry in this series. Matthew 21:19-21 gives the account of the withered fig tree. This occurred after Jesus cast those who were buying and selling out of the temple.

"Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, 'May you never bear fruit again!' Immediately the tree withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. 'How did the fig tree wither so quickly?' they asked. Jesus replied, 'Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.'"
Now, many get confused on what Jesus meant. He did say that what we ask for in prayer we will receive, but prefaced that by saying, "IF YOU BELIEVE." Let me give you an example. If someone says to you, "You are Christian. Come to my Grandmother's house, and ask God to heal her - she will be fully healed." If you ask God, but have doubts as to whether she will be healed, that is not believing. You may believe he can do extraordinary things, but have doubts.

That is also the case with selfish prayers, though we do not always see them as selfish. God knows our entire life, and if we pray for something that he knows in the long run will not be beneficial or teach us anything, help us grow, he cannot grant the request. (See entry: "Are Selfish Prayers Answered?" for more on the subject.) Let's take a look at Luke 4:29-30.

Luke 4:29-30 says, "They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way."What is meant by this passage is... Jesus walked right through them - they could not stop him. Why?

Some say that Time was stopped, and Jesus walked away. Some say that out of fear, they merely could not make a move to stop him. Others say that Jesus walked through them without them even noticing. Regardless, this was a miracle of Jesus - he walked away as a mob of people were trying to kill him.

The last miracle that we will take a look it is one that is well-known, even among those who have never read The Bible. John 2:1-11. Jesus and his disciples, along with Mary (mother of Jesus) were invited to and attended a wedding in Cana. When the wine was all gone, Mary came and consulted Jesus.

He replies, "Woman, why do you involve me? My time has not yet come." Without saying another word, she turns to the servants and says, "Do whatever he tells you." Another translation says, "Woman, what do you have to do with this?" What can we tell from this? Mary, knowing Jesus well enough, understands that he will help - but it is still a mystery as to why he replied the way he did, though we can speculate.

"Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding twenty to thirty gallons." That's a lot of wine, folks. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." They filled them to the brim. "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." Here is the rest of the account: "They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, 'Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.' What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the sings through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples put their faith in him." Jesus turned the water into wine.

I would like to point something out. Many churches use wine that is in decay - alcoholic wine - for communion, and assume that it was the kind of wine that Jesus used to represent his blood. Not so. Jesus used the wine to represent his blood, which was pure blood - later shown as blood and water. So if he used wine to represent his blood, the wine would not be in decay, therefore, it would not be alcoholic wine. I say this so that those who say that Jesus drank alcohol may understand and know, though I am not criticizing churches for their representation of Communion, merely pointing something out.

Understand that the miracles we have covered are only most of those covered in the Gospels. To read of more, read the Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, bearing in mind that Jesus is the Son of God, and that some of the miracles, even the most minute, are incredible.

There is so much evidence for God, for Creation, for The Bible, for Jesus - some either reject because they say none of it is true, or refuse to believe, or - refuse to look at all the evidence for themselves. WayOfTheMaster.com and AnswersInGenesis.com are both great websites if you are a non-believer looking for cold, hard facts, as is ChristianAnswers.net - though all views and opinions expressed do not necessarily always reflect my views, but my views are not perfect, none of ours are.

Before I close out this series, I want to present a quote, from Daniel Webster, who wrote Webster's Dictionary. "If I might comprehend Jesus Christ, I could not believe on Him. He would be no greater than myself. Such is my consciousness of sin and inability that I must have a superhuman Saviour." (emphasis added)

Here are two quotes from Sir Isaac Newton, one of the most brilliant minds in all of history: "There are more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane history." "This thing [a scale model of our solar system] is but a puny imitation of a much grander system whose laws you know, and I am not able to convince you that this mere toy is without a designer and maker; yet you, as an atheist, profess to believe that the great original from which the design is taken has come into being without either designer or maker! Now tell me by what sort of reasoning do you reach such an incongruous conclusion?"

What can we gain by looking at these famous men who felt very strongly about God and Truth? That's what they spent their lives doing! Many people accept the laws that Kepler and Newton introduced, yet they were both self-proclaimed Christians! Evidence of the Creator is all around us, it's whether you accept him or reject him - and the miracles Jesus performed also prove that to us. Jesus calls unbelievers to confess that Jesus is Lord, believe that he died and rose from the dead, and accept him as savior, asking forgiveness for their sins and turning from their ways.

Thank you for taking the time to read this series, I pray that it was insightful and helpful. This concludes the series on "The Miracles of Jesus."
